5 Ways to Level Up Your Next Corporate or Government Event

The best corporate and government events shouldn’t feel like corporate or government events at all. They should feel like memorable experiences worth talking about weeks later, something that actually makes you laugh and smile. It feels like a lot to make company events something employees look forward to but the difference between a forgettable afternoon and a genuinely fun experience is smaller than you think. Corporate and government events should create moments that change how people feel about their organization, their colleagues, and their work. The Western Riverside Council of Governments (WRCOG) got it right at their 35th Annual General Assembly & Leadership Address. Here are the 5 most impactful things they did.

1. Prominent Keynote Speaker

The best way to get people to show up and pay attention is to give them a compelling reason to. A powerful keynote speaker sets the tone for the entire event and, when done right, becomes the topic attendees are talking about even before they find their seats.
WRCOG has made it a tradition to bring speakers who inspire. Past General Assemblies have featured former U.S. President George W. Bush, Los Angeles Rams Head Coach Sean McVay, and acclaimed presidential historian and author Doris Kearns Goodwin.
This year, WRCOG had skateboarding legend Tony Hawk take the stage. Hawk turned professional at just 14 years old, became a 16-time X Games medalist, and in 1999 became the first skater in history to land a 900. He went on to launch the iconic Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater video game franchise, a now billion dollar brand; authored New York Times bestselling books; founded the production company 900 Films; and established The Skatepark Project, a nonprofit that has donated over $10 million to more than 650 skatepark projects across the United States.

His presentation at WRCOG’s General Assembly & Leadership Address wasn’t just powerful because of his legendary resume. Hawk spoke about his journey as a skateboarding legend, his business ventures, and the lessons he learned along the way. His message gave attendees a fresh perspective on leadership, perseverance, and reinvention making him the kind of keynote speaker who reminds you why you came.

2. Skit

The part of the program that had the most profound effect on the audience, surprisingly, was not the celebrity keynote speaker but the comedy skit produced by Promeli Videoworks.
The skit was a hilarious and surprisingly heartfelt take on the generational divide playing out in workplaces everywhere. The story follows Olivia Sanchez, a Program Manager for Environmental and Solid Waste at WRCOG, as she struggles to understand the Gen-Z employees in the office. In a dramatic turn of events she finds the 90’s dust which transports her back to the 90s. She finds her colleagues who have managed to hilariously blend Gen-Z slang with 90’s lingo creating iconic moments like when Michael Vargas, mayor of the City of Perris, walks out decked in skating gear and says “I’m actually good in all things Gen-Z. I lowkey just come here when I wanna relive my shredder era. My aura is maxed out in the 90s.” The production even included a 90s-themed commercial for a book titled So Your Kid Says “Bet”: The Gen-X Guide to Talking to Gen-Z and a spot-on “The More You Know” PSA which assured the older generation that they are not the “uncs” they think they are, details which showed how much craft and care went into every frame.

What made it land so well was the cast composed entirely of WRCOG employees and city officials, not actors. Seeing familiar faces commit to the bit elevated the energy in the room in a way that no outside performer could have replicated. Attendees were giving glowing reviews for the skit throughout the rest of the evening, many even calling the skit the highlight of the night.

3. Photo-Ops

Never underestimate the power of a great photo moment. WRCOG offered attendees two dedicated photo opportunities, each complete with professional photographers, vibrant backdrops, and fun props.
Photo-ops like these give guests a fun way to interact and laugh together and they generate authentic, shareable content that extends the life of the event beyond the venue, making your event reach an audience far beyond the guest list.

4. Networking and Booths

A corporate or government event is only as strong as the connections it creates; at WRCOG there was plenty of room for that to happen. The General Assembly & Leadership Address featured booths from an impressive lineup of sponsors including UC Riverside, IREN, Ontario International Airport, Best Best & Krieger LLP, and more. It gave attendees and sponsors a chance to connect directly with organizations and officials shaping the region.
The networking continued into the evening with an after-party featuring a DJ, dance floor, and disco lights which created an atmosphere that made it easy for people to converse and connect.

5. Graphics

Great visuals make everything feel more polished, intentional, and alive. WRCOG’s General Assembly & Leadership Address had a thoughtful design made complete with projected logos and themed graphics which were produced by Promeli Videoworks. The visuals gave a cohesive, high-energy look that elevated the space from the moment guests walked in
One detail that stands out the most was the Tony Hawk-themed cardboard pop-up photo cutout, a nod to the night’s keynote speaker. It was a small addition, but contributed to the greater atmosphere. The best event graphics don’t just decorate, they add personality. When everything looks and feels like they belong together, people will remember the event long after it ends
